E 77Th St, New York, NY
Renovated for art dealer Christophe Van de Weghe, the 3,500 sq.ft. townhouse was designed to house his collection of modern and postwar European and American art, including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alexander Calder, Duane Hanson, and Andy Warhol. We worked with Christophe on numerous occasions, designing his galleries and homes in the city and the Hamptons.
The new townhouse is located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in a narrow, five-story 19th-century structure, once home to a nephew of J.P. Morgan. The building’s compact footprint and elongated layout presented challenges with circulation and natural light, addressed through strategic architectural and interior interventions.
The historic façade was carefully restored to match archival records. Original architectural features, including a slate mansard roof, were preserved, while outdoor areas including a garden-level yard and terraces on the second and fourth floors extend the living and exhibition spaces. Four of the five levels are dedicated to viewing art, while the top floor serves as a private lounge with a wet bar for entertaining.
Furnishings by Jean Royère, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Angelo Mangiarotti, and others were selected and set into curated and intimate environments to complement the art.
